Why use SSL?
SSL sends information across the internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can understand it. SSL establishes a secure connection between your visitor’s browser and your webshop. It allows you to sent private and sensitive information, such as payment credentials, across the internet without having to worry about the problems of eavesdropping, data tampering, and message forgery.
HTTP/2 speeds up your secured shop
We’ve updated our Nginx webserver to include http2 support. Every Hypernode automatically uses HTTP/2, so you don’t have to do anything. HTTP/2 has the advantage of speeding up websites when using SSL. So follow up on the instructions below and add SSL to your Magento shop, making it not only safer for your customers, but also faster.
Other benefits from using SSL
Besides the obvious reason why you should use an SSL certificate to protect your visitors data, it has other benefits. Although the opinions differ, it is said that having an SSL certificate boosts your SEO. In 2014 Google announced that it will begin to give a ranking boost to SSL-secured websites.
SSL also protects against phishing. Phishing emails usually contain a link to the criminals website, by impersonating your website. When your using SSL it’s practically impossible for them to impersonate your site perfectly.
SSL certificates give your webshop trust indicators, such as HTTPS and, if you have an EV certificate, a green address bar (see below).
SSL on Hypernode
It is possible to use SSL certificates on your Hypernode. This way, your shop will become securely accessible using HTTPS.
Byte customers with a Hypernode hosting plan have 3 different options to use SSL:
- You can order one via Byte and profit from our managed service (recommended),
- Make use of Let’s Encrypt
- Upload your own certificate.

What to do when the SSL Check returns “Unknown” on a Hypernode
If you check your Hypernode with MageReport, in some occasions the check returns “Unknown”. This is because not all Hypernodes have a Let’s Encrypt certificate for the
